What should I bring to the first initial consult?

It is recommended to fill out the Naturopathic intake form online before you come into your visit, as the form is lengthy and gives Dr. Deol a good idea of your health concerns before you come in for your initial visit.

Any recent blood work or diagnostic tests should be brought in to address any physiological abnormalities and preventable illnesses.

Initial Consult: 60-90 minutes

The initial consult is a comprehensive assessment of your current health concerns along with a review of other variables such as diet, lifestyle, stress, and exercise. These other variables are addressed to identify other factors in your lifestyle that may be contributing to your current illness. A physical exam, specific to your complaint, including vitals at every visit, may also be performed.

Follow up visit: 30-45 minutes

A comprehensive, individualized treatment approach will be given and any other information required for further assessment is to be done at this point. As treatment progresses, follow up visits usually last about 30 minutes. Acupuncture appointments are approximately 30 minutes in length also.

Common Questions:

What makes Naturopathic Doctor’s primary health care providers?

Naturopathic Doctors are certified to diagnose and treat any illness. We are highly trained to read and assess lab reports and recommend any other diagnostic testing that may be required to find out the root cause of your illness. In addition, we are trained to perform a full physical exam on all our patients (ie. Ear exam, eye exam, cardiovascular exam, pap smears, prostate exam, breast exam, etc.).

How to become a registered Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopathic Doctors complete seven to eight years of training: three-four years of pre-medical sciences in university, followed by 4 years (over 5,000 hours) at an approved naturopathic medical college.

For the first 3 years, the naturopathic curriculum strongly resembles the training given to medical students, although an emphasis is put on how imperative it is to treat the cause of illness and how to enhance the body’s natural ability to heal. Training in a variety of natural therapies is taught to emphasis this philosophy, with over 1,200 hours of clinical experience.

Following their received designation Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND), to become licensed in Alberta, ND’s must successfully complete the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam. And only then, they are able to practice in Alberta.

Naturopathic Doctors are also required to complete a number of continuing education courses per year to maintain their registration with the College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta (CNDA).

Is Naturopathic Medicine covered?

Naturopathic Medicine is not covered through your Alberta health card, although, depending on your insurance benefits, you may have some coverage. The invoice you receive can be sent directly to your insurance provider or call ahead to see what type of coverage you have for naturopathic medicine.

What lab tests and/or diagnostic tests are we certified to perform? Costs?

Naturopathic Doctors are certified to perform a wide array of diagnostic testing. Since the Alberta government does not cover visits, common lab tests (i.e. full CBC, cholesterol, glucose levels, B12, Vitamin D, hormone testing, etc.) are also not covered. They can be done in a Naturopathic clinic, although the patient pays directly for each test. It is common for Naturopathic Doctors to be in contact with the patient’s Medical doctor, to recommend any additional testing. Specific tests, such as food allergy testing or stool tests, are specific to naturopathic practices and do come at a cost for the patient. The cost of tests can range from $10 – $300.
