What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Posted by Dr.Kirti Deol
Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct system of primary health care that addresses the root causes of illnesses and promotes healing, while using an integrative approach to disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
The integrated approach is the practice of medicine that:
• stresses the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient
• focuses on the whole person
• is informed by evidence
• makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches to achieve optimal health and healing
Naturopathic Doctors use a number of different therapies to help move patients towards a healthier state. Some examples are acupuncture, hydrotherapy, massage, botanical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy and clinical nutrition. Intertwining these therapies has allowed naturopathic doctors to treat a wide array of illnesses, focusing on the cause of illness and using an individualized treatment approach. By identifying and removing the underlying cause, Naturopathic Doctors are a part of a healthcare system that provides long-term symptomatic relief and preventative care.
Naturopathic Doctors stress the importance of educating patients about their own health. Through this education, patients become more empowered and aware of their health. Making patients aware of how the whole body can affect ones health encourages them to take control of all aspects of their life and move towards a healthier lifestyle.
